David Gregory, star of Meet the Jerk

David Gregory seems to have a limitless capacity for being a jerk. He recently mocked Wayne LaPierre for his suggestion that armed cops be placed in schools.

“You proposed armed guards in school. We’ll talk about that in some detail in a moment. You confronted the news media. You blamed Hollywood and the gaming industry. But never once did you concede that guns could actually be part of the problem. Is that a meaningful contribution, Mr. LaPierre, or a dodge?,”

Yet when it comes to his own kids, well, the school they attend has armed guards.

But when it comes to Gregory’s own kids, however, they are secured every school day by armed guards.

The Gregory children go to school with the children of President Barack Obama, according to the Washington Post. That school is the co-ed Quaker school Sidwell Friends.

According to a scan of the school’s online faculty-staff directory, Sidwell has a security department made up of at least 11 people. Many of those are police officers, who are presumably armed.

Moreover, with the Obama kids in attendance, there is a secret service presence at the institution, as well.

Then the guy who calls for more and stricter gun laws decided he was above the gun laws:

David Gregory is being investigated by police over the gun magazine that he showed on Sunday’s “Meet the Press.”

Gregory held up what appeared to be a 30-round gun magazine during his contentious interview with the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre. He was asking LaPierre whether fewer victims would have died in the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School if the gunman had not had access to so many bullets.

Araz Alali, police officer and spokesman, confirmed to Politico on Tuesday that the Metropolitan Police Department is looking into “The ‘Meet the Press,’ David Gregory incident.” “There are D.C. code violations, D.C. code restrictions on guns, ammunition. We are investigating this matter. Beyond the scope of that, I can’t comment any further,” he said.

The code in question says, “No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm,” and has been mentioned by numerous conservatives making the argument against Gregory.

What he did was illegal and he knew it.

Earlier, it was also reported that the network had requested and was denied permission to use the magazine directly by the D.C. police. Legal Insurrection’s William A. Jacobson confirmed the report with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Aziz Alali, who said:

“NBC contacted the Metropolitan Police Department inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for this segment. NBC was informed that that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and the request was denied.”

But Gregory being a showboat was more important than his following the law.

Gregory has a history full of reports of self-absorbed behavior:

About a month ago, he joined NBC colleague Tim Russert at a Washington D.C. restaurant for dinner, where he showed his lack of appreciation for the help. David Gregory: Not a consummate dining companion?

The twosome’s waitress somehow messed up their dinner order, and Gregory – who CBS is supposedly “enamored” with in their hunt for a Katie Couric replacement – let’s say, caustically reminded her how bad she erred.

But the server wasn’t the only one who got a scolding: Russert chewed Gregory out for his tactless behavior. “Russert warned Gregory never to behave that way in front of him again,” says a spy.

And once MSNBC got wind of the story, they made Gregory “promise up and down to change his behavior” before they handed him the 6pm slot, we’re told. Not to mention that this incident is not, we’re assured, the first time Gregory has chewed out a less-than-competent service employee.

But the NBC staffers in D.C. wouldn’t be surprised — that’s his normal workplace behavior. “He still treats most of … the newsroom like shit,” says a NBC insider. Not that the higher ups are reprimanding him for how he treats his staff or anything. Says our tattler: “Amazing how NBC cares more about food servers than about the people who have to deal with Gregory’s arrogance every day.”

and

“Once, I was hanging with some friends in DC and we decided to go to the Capitol. We agreed to meet at a certain point at the front steps when we were done. There were maybe 8 of us. Well it turns out that David Gregory was reporting from the lawn of the Capitol around the spot where we were meeting up. The guy did his report, turned around, and proceeded to berate us and curse at us for being fame seeking assholes for ruining his shot and then asked if we wanted his autograph.”

Don Imus suggested that a drunk Gregory called into Imus’ show.

Then there was a lively exchange with then-White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan:

‘Don’t accuse me of trying to pose to the cameras,’ the newsman said, his voice rising somewhat. ‘Don’t be a jerk to me personally when I’m asking you a serious question.’

‘You don’t have to yell,’ McClellan said.

‘I will yell,” said Gregory, pointing a finger at McCellan at his dais. ‘If you want to use that podium to try to take shots at me personally, which I don’t appreciate, then I will raise my voice, because that’s wrong.’

‘Calm down, Dave, calm down,’ said McClellan, remaining calm throughout the exchange.

‘I’ll calm down when I feel like calming down,’ Gregory said. ‘You answer the question.’

This from Gawker:

As we said yesterday, his reputation in DC was not particularly bad for a TV “star.” But that town is sycophantic enough to forgive a lot. So far, you all agree that David Gregory is, in fact, a jerk.

And this from Gawker:

He might well be hated by his staff and mean to wait-staff. He’s smug, self-important, and largely humorless despite his on-air geniality (it’s almost like he’s in television!).

The consensus is in. David Gregory is a jerk.

Which might be the real reason that this coming Sunday Gregory won’t Meet the Press.

The latest ”spin” is that you don’t even have to be a criminal to break gun laws.
Well…..DUH!!!
That’s why we double-check everything when it comes to our firearms!
Especially in CA.
Here, you inadvertently break one gun law and WHAM! you lose all your guns.
I hope NBC has to pay big time for that stunt!
It is the only way to ever teach them a lesson.

You have no idea how good this story makes me feel. After years of watching this self-anointed stuffed shirt in press conferences in which he clearly shows his arrogance with no journalistic credibility, it is great to see him on the receiving end of his rank meanness.
No Meet the Press this Sunday? Really? Thank you God.

BTW, great photo.

@Art: If my memory serves me correct Gregory insists on being called David. That’s why GW always called him Dave at pressers.

@inthemiddle: Cool thing to know. Got to remember to use it. Good for GW and thanks.

Jerk is a bit mild for this idiot. Why do the MSM bring on guests and treat them like they commited a crime. They think that they are journalists but a real journalist would never act like this jerk….Let him take his kids out of a school that is guarded and put him in one that is like our children are in….The biggest jerk going……..

Anyone who watches David Greggory or Don Imus or Glenn Beck is a little whacked out.
