It might be relevant that the armed citizen was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, if what is being suggested is that any armed citizen is qualified to make decisions about using deadly force in public settings. Imagine what might develop in a crowded theater where fifteen or twenty random citizens are carrying firearms. Perhaps that hypothetical scenario warrants some consideration.

This particular shooter went off over a girlfriend situation, a crime of passion, not thought out in advance.
But when a potential mass killer thinks about his crime he does not go off ”half-cocked,” so to speak.
He PLANS his crime.
He looks for a safe (for him) target rich environment.
That is why the Batman shooter bypassed other, closer theaters and went to the CineMark with the signs saying no firearms allowed at all.
4% of Colorado’s population has a CCR.
That is also why this Conn shooter went to a public school.
It was also designated with signs as a gun free zone.

The headline suggests something quite different than when you actually watch the report.
The off-duty deputy was no more trained in the use of firearms than most who go through the classes for their CCL.

@Greg: Frankly most people with guns don’t have a clue how to use them. They buy them, load them and put them in a drawer, thinking that when the need arises they’ll be protected. Then there are those that actually spend time and money getting training and practice. I can tell you that I’d prefer it if everyone that buys a hand gun is required to attend at least a one day training, not a bunch of book stuff but actual hands on, showing proficiency in both the handling of the weapon and the practical application of putting rounds down range. I’ve had guns for a LONG time, qualified on an M16 long long long ago, I got a 9mm, practiced a bunch, went and sought out basic training because I knew more knowledge is a good thing. Looking forward to more training, not that I’ll EVER get a CCL here in the PRK but because it makes me more proficient if some dickwad decides I’m a old soft target.
