Romney-Betrayus would smash Obama-Biden [Reader Post]

Rumor has it Mitt Romney is considering naming Gen David Petraeus as his VP nominee. Because I am a cynic, I have several thoughts.

One, this would be so cool. To the left this ticket would be known as Romney-Betrayus, Betray-us being the name given to Petraeus by the left.

There is little doubt that a Romney-Petraeus ticket would be the end of the Obama regime. Petraeus had a falling out with Obama, but Obama kept him for his own political reasons. Petraeus would provide a bullet-proof cover for Romney.

Two, who is leaking this information? It’s been alleged that it came from Obama himself,

**Exclusive**

President Obama whispered to a top fundraiser this week that he believes GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney wants to name Gen. David Petraeus to the VP slot!

“The president wasn’t joking,” the insider explains to the DRUDGE REPORT.

A Petraeus drama has been quietly building behind the scenes.

Romney is believed to have secretly met with the four-star general in New Hampshire.

The pick could be a shrewd Romney choice. A cross-party pull. The Obama administration hailed Petraeus as one of history’s greatest military strategists. Petraeus was unanimously confirmed as the Director of the CIA by the US Senate 94-0.

But Petraeus has categorically asserted that he has NO political ambitions. And Team Obama stands prepared to tie one of their own to “Bush wars.” A Petraeus pick could been seen as simply shuffling the decks of power in DC.

“He’s a serious man, for seriously dangerous times,” notes a top Republican.

A DRUDGE POLL on Tuesday morning showed readers split on if Romney should give it a go.

And the calendar is running out of days.

but then Carney denies it,

During the White House Press Briefing today, Press Secretary Jay Carney told a reporter to “be mindful of your sources” when asked about the Drudge Report article reporting that Mitt Romney was considering selecting former Army General and current CIA Director David Petraeus as his running mate.

The report asserted that President Obama privately told a top fundraiser that Romney was considering it.

“I can say with absolute confidence, such an assertion has never been uttered by the president.” Carney said. “And again be mindful of your sources.”

which given Carney’s prevaricating nature would lend it credence.

Three, Romney demurred answering the question, which again lends credence to the story.

POOL REPORT: Romney asked: ‘Governor, have you met with General Petraeus in New Hampshire?’… Romney ignored the question… ‘Thank you so much, good to see you’…

Four, someone is floating this story to steal the thunder from the real choice. It’s getting really interesting and at just the right moment.

I don’t know who Mitt is going to choose, but choosing Petraeus would change everything.

Sayonara, Obama-san.

Unfortunately, it looks like he turned it down if he was indeed offered the slot.

Everybody always says they personally don’t want the job. However, when the offer is on the table from the nominee himself it is a differant story. Romney has not yet said to someone ” I want you for my veep.”

@harp1034: Maybe. We’ll see.

@another vet:

Perhaps, but if he knew that his acceptance would dethrone Obama maybe he’d reconsider.

@drjohn: Hope so.

Patraeus already has a job of vital importance to his country that makes full use of his capabilities. Why would he leave that for a chance to play second fiddle to Mitt Romney?

@Jason: the establishment could marginalize him as VP — blocking the way for Jebbie’s ascent

@Jason: Becasue any VP to Mitt would be a real player. He would not be a Biden. Mitt’s VP will be expected to accomplish something, not just spew nonsence!

Who knows what his real politics are? Remember folks, he’s not the general who stood up to O when he saw mistakes being made, he’s the one who went along with them. . . and got promoted for his trouble.

Allen West remains the best man in the GOP for the office of POTUS, with the second best so far behind as to be unidentifiable. I’d trust a former officer who sacrificed his career for the good of the troops over one that advanced his by going along with policies he knew put them in danger.

@JustAl: Petraeus had 4 stars before Obama was President. He took the Job in Afghanistan to protect troops after disasterous policy was formulated by the administration. He retired and took a critical position to make sure valid intel got to the troops. General Petraeus is one of the best. Folks who served with him want to serve with him again.

@Randy: The job he holds now is the promotion of which I spoke. How, exactly, was making the ROE’s even worse “protecting” the troops? My son was one of those troops he “protected” by making it virtually impossible to call in fire on the enemy without exposing freindllies to undue risk.

COIN as envisoned by the good general has never worked. I’m sure his staff felt quiet safe with him.

I say again, no one knows his politics. Collen Powell was also a favorite choice for VP by many who assume a uniform with stars is an adequate qualification. The same Collen Powell who convinced Bush 41 to stop the war at 100 hours and leave Saddam for another generation to fight, the same Powell who supported “O” in ’08. Petraeus is an unknown quantity for a ticket headed by a self proclaimed “progressive”.

@JustAl: My son and I were one of his troops and COIN worked where the state department bowed out. I still get emails and calls from people in Iraq that we successfully helped. The job Petraeus has now is not a promotion, but a means of improving the intel our troops get. You need to understand how the system works or doesn’t. Remember, the military is commanded by the administration, a civilian organization. Petraeus was never commander in chief. That is the responsibility of the president and only he!

@Randy:

And this makes him worthwhile as a VP because. . . . ????

Consider the fact that it was Obama who started this rumor. No doubt he knew Petraeous wasn’t interested before he started it. So now, to the casual observer Petraeous can be seen as de-facto preferring Obama over Romney.

Is he “Obama’s man”? We simply have no way to know. But Obama knows those of us who want him gone are desperate to shore up a questionable GOP candidate. And now, those who got excited are on their backs looking at the clouds just like Charlie Brown trying to kick the ball Lucy is holding for him.

And THAT’s how the “system” works, hold a red cape out in front of the opponent to get them off track and make them stumble. This round goes to team “O”.

@JustAl: Those who served under Petraeus trust him and to quote on officer, “I would follow him into Hell”. Petraeus knows more about foreign affairs than likely any one except Bolton. He understands how to use the military without sacraficing the troops. He understands how to apply subtle pressure where it is needed. He recognizes good, competent people and surrounds himself with them. He makes the decisions, but listens to the perspective of others. Romney would learn a lot from him. Who else has the experiences and academic qualifications of Petraeus? Name one who has been considered!

@Randy:
To repeat and rephrase what I’ve posted here twice and you’ve ignored twice; name ONE position he has on ANY political issue. Name one!

@JustAl: He is not in any position where he is authorized to take a position. Are you ignorant of regulations regarding military and civilian employees? You may want to spend a little time understanding restrictions on government employees.

@Randy:
You sir, appear to be ignorant of the process of choosing political representatives. We’re supposted to think he’s OK because you sayhe’s OK and then insult those who disagree with you? He is not in the military now (as you yourself pointed out). Sorry bud, not interested in more from the “old boys” club. You go follow him anywhere you like, the job of VP is way to important to just “guess” where someone stands.

In fact. If THIS is true, there’s no way in hell I’d vote for a “Rockefeller” Republican: http://www.tnr.com/blog/the-plank/petraeus-republican, one of those on the ticket is quiet enough for the TEA partier, thank you very much.

Moot point for Petraeus or his politics. This is just Drudge, floating BS again (like Condi), attempting to be relevant and get back a bit of his ol’ glory days of being a news breaker.

The nation is focused on economics, and tired of wars. No way Petraeus would be a Romney pick in this election. Same with Condi. What would either of them add, considering the prime issues on voters’ minds?

But it gives the masses something to gnaw on, and be duly awestruck as to where Drudge gets his info.

@JustAl: Are you aware that as a civil service employee it is illigal to use your office for political purposes? The administration seems to give Jaes Hanson a pass. The only people who comply with the regulations are those with integrity. You would know little about that. Those of us who have served honorably judge our leaders by their actions. General Petraeus was promoted through the ranks based on his performance, not who he knew. Name a politician who meets that! Maybe you should look at what he has done instead of what he says he would do. Actions speak much more than words. Petraeus is not part of the “good old boys club”. He earned his stars. Can you say that about Obama?

@JustAl:

I say again, no one knows his politics.

The information in your New Republic link regarding Petraeus and Party affiliation as well as voting history is also found in Thomas Ricks’ The Gamble.

@Wordsmith: Actually, wouldn’t it be nice to have areal leader again who actually cares about his country?
