SEIU’s Dummies’ Guide to Intimidation [Reader Post]

In the Washington Times F. Vincent Vernuccio describes the disclosure of an “intimidation manual” created by the SEIU.

In the past decade, unions have become increasingly desperate to obtain new dues-paying members. An example of how desperate can be found in a 70-plus-page intimidation manual from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which only recently came to light in a pending court case.

The new union tactic is to use pressure on corporate boardrooms as a means of organizing entire companies nationwide rather than recruiting workers on a site-by-site basis; in short, to organize employers rather than employees. To create this pressure, unions attempt to push businesses to the edge of bankruptcy, with little regard for the welfare of employer and employee. They attempt to strong-arm businesses into agreeing to take away the secret ballot for employees in union-organizing elections via card check. They also try to force employers to restrict their own speech on union issues so that workers will not get both sides of the story on unionization. Among the SEIU’s demands is that employers agree to bargain only with it, to the exclusion of all other unions, regardless of what workers want.

It offers clear instructions on how to harass potential targets:

It details the use of community groups to “damage an employer’s public image and ties with community leaders and organizations.” SEIU recommends going after company officials personally. Not mincing words, SEIU states, “It may be a violation of blackmail and extortion laws to threaten management officials with release of ‘dirt’ about them if they don’t settle a contract. But there is no law against union members who are angry at their employer deciding to uncover and publicize factual information about individual managers.”

The “dirt” includes charges such as “racism, sexism, exploitation of immigrants or proposals that would take money out of the community for the benefits of distant stockholders.” SEIU recommends “[l]eafleting outside meetings where [targeted managers] are speaking, their homes, or events sponsored by community organizations they are tied to are some ways to make sure their friends, neighbors, and associates are aware of the controversy.”

The SEIU has not hesitated to use these tactics. In one case they stormed all over the personal residence of Greg Baer, trapping his 14 year old son inside his own home. Another incident with the SEIU left black conservative Kenneth Gladney beaten.

These and numerous other incidents have earned the SEIU the monicker “The Purple People Beaters.”

Disgusting. This is one of the reasons we have issues. – and I was a member of a union for over 20 years. They didn’t care one iota about me all they cared about was that I paid my dues. I believe in right to work. The unions are baracks knee breaking, ball busting thugs.

Something a whole lot wrong when someone earning a dime can call the shots on what you own.

SEIU workers are home health care people, among other things, right? Isn’t that enough to scare hell out you. If what you get is what you see on the news at these riots, I hope I die a quiet death.

What a sorry bunch of people.

If you have Microsoft Word, you can download Chapter 4 of the SEIU handbook in it’s entirety by clicking here: Chapter 4, Pressuring the Employer.

What you will find is a 94 page, in-depth discussion of entirely legitimate tactics that can be useful in various organized labor situations. Yes, they do involve pressuring the employer. That’s what opposing sides tend do in adversarial situations. What you won’t find in the handbook is anything a reasonable, non-milquetoast person would characterize as “thuggery”.

Michelle Malkin launched this particular attack on FOX this past week. Crooks and Liars has posted Malkin’s FOX News video–an entirely appropriate place to rebut the smear. The woman distorts the truth. What no one who attacks the SEIU publication does is display or directly quote any part of the actual publication. You’d think people would notice.

This handbook was being followed when a 14-year-old boy was trapped in his home alone by a crowd of SEIU union thugs out front.
They were supposedly after his father.
But it was the man’s family they terrorized.
Just like when Israeli babies have their throats’ slit by Hamas and Hezbollah.
The young innocents are considered ”legitimate” targets.
Too bad the SEIU thugs chose as a target a lifelong Democrat who was next-door neighbors with Fortune magazine’s Nina Easton.
the rest of the media did a no-show.
Only a Huff Po reporter invited by SEIU was there.
Nina gave an excellent 1st person report.

@Greg: You said:

There are a LOT of mistakes, grammatical errors and other signs that make me wish to see the original of that document.

In 1991, the late United Food and Commercial Workers union strategist Joe Crump said to union organizers, “Employees are complex and unpredictable. Employers are simple and predictable. Organize employers, not employees.”

Fits right into the point of the OP.

Crooks and Liars? Oh yes greg, what a reputable site. Buwhahahahahaha! The second anyone reads what C&L says about the protest and then goes to the link Nan provided, they’ll see what I mean. It seems the left named that site after themselves. As usual greg defends the left no matter what they do.

@Nan G, #4:

You’re equating a peaceful demonstration by unionized service workers in the United States with terrorists slitting the throats of babies. Some American workers might consider that to be an unfair comparison.

@Hard Right, #7:

The Washington Times is an unbiased source? The newspaper was founded in 1982 by Sun Myung Moon. The guy has proclaimed himself to be the Messiah and the Second Coming of Christ. His stated purpose for the paper is to further his church’s views and to fight communism. The Times hasn’t made a profit in any year since it was founded in 1982. It’s funded by Moon’s Unification Church. It’s a paid propaganda outlet.

The pending court case F. Vincent Vernuccio refers to where the SEIU “intimidation manual” was as revealed involves the Sodexo corporation, an enormous multinational food service and facility management corporation based in France. They’re essentially at war with the union. Smearing SEIU is part of their current legal strategy.

Sodexo ripped off New York taxpayers by overcharging for contracted services and pocketing money by was of an undisclosed rebate scheme. The corporation settled by paying the state $30 million. Sodexo has been charged with similar practices in New Jersey, California, and the District of Columbia. They’ve been boycotted in London, Iceland, Quebec, and the United States by paying customers of the various services they’ve taken over. Workers have organized against the company because of substandard wages, and for lowering wages at facilities they’ve taken over.

Are we surprised that Obama and the SEIU are in bed together? Birds of a feather …

Recent news about Sodexo:

For the fourth year in a row, Sodexo, a world leader in Quality of Daily Life Solutions in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, has been named to the prestigious Black Enterprise Top 40 Companies for Diversity list.

Based on survey responses from more than 1,000 publicly traded and global companies with strong presence in the United States, Sodexo was recognized for its strength in three areas: the percentage of African Americans and members of other ethnic minority groups represented in its total workforce, the percentage of senior management positions held by African Americans and members of other ethnic groups, and the percentage of African Americans and other ethnic minorities represented on the company board of directors.

Sodexo was also recognized for being listed on the Human Rights Campaign’s Best Places to Work.

Key Figures (as of August 31, 2010)

Greg, you must not have clicked on the link Nan provided. It shows the SEIU thugs trespassing. The person who told the paper what happened is a democrat. The police said they were afraid to arrest anyone because it might lead to violence.
Yet if you read the lie at C&L, it was quiet, peaceful, and lawful protest.
Really, you are quite the asset to the Conservative cause when you post such easily disprovable things.

The Washington Times is an unbiased source?

Was there anything at all in your response which addressed the content of the Times article in question?

How about the other source material he listed? Any attempt at all to refute those?

If so, I sure must have missed it.

CNN and Fortune were the link I provided.
So, are you going to slam the two of them as well, Greg?
Ad hominum attacks don’t address the issues involved.
Nina Easton had a two year old baby sleeping when the SEIU thugs began screaming.
Her husband tried to get them to be quiet.
They shouted at him as well as at the home of their target….who was NOT even home.
At the time of the loud protest SEIU owed the Bank of America $4 million in interest and fees on outstanding loans.*
Seems they had side motives for their protest, huh?

*CNN again.

I wonder how well Greg would type after his finger was bitten off, by the union thug bit off that guys finger last year. If these workers were so goddamn valuable, WTF do they need a union for? I retired after 21 years in the Navy. Boy, you sure could tell which jobs were done by union workers, and which were not. The union jobs were ALWAYS shitty, slow, and needed rework. Shipyards are never fun, but the ones in Connecticut and Washington state were absolute armpits.

the UNION’S TUGS COULD BE VERY SURPRISED ONE DAY TO BE MET BY A NUGGET IN THEIR PANTS,
A COUPLE OF NUGGETS FOR THE HEAVYSET TUGS, THAT WOULD BE A PERMANENT REMINDER TO BE VERY POLITE WITH THE EMPLOYERS, AND THEY WOULD PROBABLY CHANGE THEIR TUNES,
WALK FUNNY FOR A LONG LIFE TIME, AND NOBODY WOULD KNOW WHY THEY WALK
SO FUNNY SUDDENLY THEY WOULD FIND THAT YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT A NICE GUY COULD DO IF CHALLENGED
