Government programs have accomplished what slavery and Jim Crow could not… they’ve destroyed the black family [Reader Post]

For those of you who have never looked at my picture, I’m a white guy. Given the subject of today’s piece I might as well get it out of the way. In addition, other than participating in ROTC at Florida A&M University (an historically black institution), spending a semester in Florida State’s Degraff Hall dormitory (at that time the dorm established primarily for “African American students”) and minoring in Black Studies while at FSU, I don’t have any particular experience in what one might call black culture. (I use the word culture in the general sense, recognizing that not every member of a particular group shares all aspects of that culture.)

I do have eyes however, and much of what I see of black America is not good. I say that not as an indictment of black people. On the contrary. I don’t think blacks are any better or worse than anyone else on the planet or in the country.

That being said, I put pen to paper on this topic because of a series of disturbing headlines I’ve seen over the last month combined with something Walter Williams recently said on John Stossel’s show. Over the Memorial Day weekend Drudge ran a series of headlines about chaos breaking out across the country: Chicago, Charlotte, Boston, Miami, Nashville… The common factor across each of these melees was that the problems involved large groups of black teens and young adults. These stories dovetailed with numerous recent accounts of “Flash Mobs” across the country (Washington, Las Vegas, St. Paul) where similar groups of black youths descended on a store of one sort or another and brazenly walked off with hundreds or thousands of dollars of merchandise.

Something struck me about the people whom I was reading about or watching on video… they seemed to have no appreciation for personal property. It seemed to me that the violence and mayhem being displayed was the result of people who had an entitlement mentality where they felt they could do whatever they wanted, could take whatever they wanted, regardless of the consequences on anyone else, simply because they could. One asks how do people end up with this type of mentality. The answer was obvious: the government’s nanny state.

Then Walter Williams crystallized my thinking when he made the observation that government programs had accomplished what slavery could not do and what Jim Crow laws could not do… they destroyed the black family. The numbers are stark. Williams points out that up until the 1940’s between 75 & 90 percent of all black children were being raised in two parent homes while today the number is less than 1/3. He continued, pointing out that the illegitimacy rate amongst blacks was 18% in 1940 but ballooned to 72.5% in 2008. In a 1985 documentary he suggested that government programs, with their “good intentions” had led America’s black families into Hell.

The recent news stories about riots and gangs and flash mobs are simply the symptom of the Hell Williams discussed. There are now millions of government supported and government non-educated black youth (and in many cases their parents before them) who simply have no understanding of the concept of individual responsibility, private property or work. The result is exactly as one would expect. As Williams points out, “If you subsidize something you get more of it” i.e. dependency, illegitimacy, poverty… and most brutally, if you tax (or regulate) something you’ll get less of it… i.e. jobs.

Culture of course is different than people and there are many black people and families who do not fit into this culture. Regardless of whether or not one agrees with the notion of a black culture in the first place, one must agree that the state of black America is difficult. Bill Jones, the Chairman of the Black Studies program at FSU back in the 1980’s once said that he could make a very strong argument that blacks in America were better off before the civil rights movement. His primary argument was built on the loss of role models in the black neighborhoods as most of the successful people moved out to the suburbs as soon as they could. Without those positive role models to show them how to act, who could the young people in those neighborhoods look to for guidance?

While that was not his position, he suggested a good argument could be made for it. He makes a valid point. Role models are always important for young people, but particularly for those growing up in difficult circumstances. Despite what Hollywood might want to suggest, data clearly demonstrate that growing up in a two parent home is one of the most powerful indicators of a child’s success in life. By ameliorating the financial burden of having children, by removing any correlation between individual responsibility and income, and most devastatingly of all, by making fathers superfluous, the liberal policies of the last five decades have destroyed the lives of millions of black Americans who make up what one may or may not want to characterize as black culture.

America is too great of a nation and the challenges of the 21st century are too many to leave any group behind. If America is going to survive and thrive well into the 21st century, it will require the entrepreneurial, creative and productive efforts of everyone, including her 40 million black citizens. Let’s face it, we’re in this together. Five decades of government policies have handicapped millions of black families and we’re seeing the consequences of those policies in headlines across the country. Perhaps the recent demonstration of that destruction playing itself out in front of news cameras and security cameras will be a catalyst to make black Americans reconsider their fealty to the Democratic Party and the big government programs that have wrought so much damage to their communities… One can only hope.

Very astute observations. Liberalism has created a new kind of “plantation” where black people are trained to rely on government for sustenance and then blame that same government when things don’t go well. A fundamental task facing the conservative movement in restoring the foundations of American prosperity will be to show African-Americans the benefits that can come from a different approach to the world. Self-reliance and individual responsibility leads to freedom, and everyone can appreciate that!

I, too, have spent most of my life in mixed family, mixed neighborhoods and schools.
I can not agree that the ”nanny government” is the cause of the way black culture is in America today.
There are a lot of contributors:

For an example, last week, the NAACP NY Chapter Head, Hazel Dukes, reamed a black mom whose child is in a charter school:
“You are not a member of the NAACP and don’t understand that you are doing the business of slave masters,” said Ms. Dukes.
See…..The NAACP is part of the teachers’ union lawsuit against the Department of Education, which wants to close 22 failing schools and open charter schools in their place. …..and a mom, a concerned parent of a charter school student, Mrs. Ramos, wanted the NAACP to drop the lawsuit because of all of the better outcomes students have in the 19 charter schools.

Having an opinion different from the union-loving NAACP equals ”doing the business of slave masters!!!!”
There’s your problem, right there.
Blacks in America are EXPECTED to think as one……or they are NOT black at all!

I could add other, older examples.
But I won’t.

Obama started out in office touting education for all Americans.
He seemed to desire blacks in America to get educated like everyone else.
But I haven’t seen him follow up on that.
Obama does set a fine example: his, his wife’s and his daughters all have or are getting fine educations.
They all dress like normal Americans and speak regular English.
But I hoped he’d have harped on ending the divide whereby black culture puts down the educated black as an ”Uncle Tom,” or an ”Oreo.”
That would be wonderful.
And, it’s not too late:
Obama could start with Ms. Dukes.

The eminent newscaster, Jim Vance, of Channel 4 (Washington, DC) gave an interview once. He said he had encountered TWELVE mothers when he was playing on his block as a kid. He said any mother on the block would come out and whip him one upside the head if he misbehaved; this applied to all children on the block.
That is how the young people learned their manners. No one cut them any slack.
In 1933, with the eminent President Franklin D. Roosevelt, there began the Progressive steamroller. The goal was to turn as many people as possible into Federal dependents, to perpetually guarantee their votes for Democratic candidates for public office. This was the source of AFDC, aid to families with dependent children. The natural consequence of AFDC was to break up poor families. The husband was told that his income was not needed; the woman required that there be no man in the house to get AFDC. So the men left. This was true regardless of race; it had disproportionate results in cities with minorities in poverty.
And we have now succeeded: over 50% pay no Federal tax; thus their votes are guaranteed for Democrats for life.
This is not freedom. This is slavery. This is worse than Jim Crow, worse than slavery, worse than a police state. This is having to live your life subject to the whim of some bureaucrat.
This cannot turn out well. All initiative to develop one’s own skills is lost. All desire to innovate, create, or produce, is gone. Just try to innovate. You will be punished.
Just sit back and be dependent. You will be rewarded.
So we have a permanent slave class: enslaved by Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, AFDC, Food Stamps, subsidized housing, school lunches, school breakfasts, ad nauseum.
America the producer has been replaced by America the mooch.
And the mooch in chief is Moochelle Obama.

Where is the most dangerous place to be black? In your mothers womb, with the governments blessing……almost 50% of all black babies are aborted. Wake up my black friends……the government isn’t doing you any favors.

It’s no surprise that a people endlessly told that society is keeping them down due to their race, that they will never get ahead, be given a fair chance, that America is evil, that they are owed something, produces anti-social progeny.
20+ years ago I recall the parents of my black friends telling them how racist America was and how the the deck was stacked against them. The result? They gave up at the old age of…..12. If you asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up, you got blank stares. A few would tell you they would never get to be anything because they were black. The dems encourage this because it gives them power and money. Yet we’re the evil ones.

Gentlemen! Vince wrote a great an realistic article! Thank you Vince! The comments as well here are excellent! Mr.Walter Williams would be an asset to any race or people! I just hope people understand that the whole racial issue is nothing more than an giant smoke bomb used by the liberal administrations and side stepped by the republicans to keep our eyes off of what they all are involved! Need to Change the guard, and abolish the NAACP and the ACLU and anybody else who keeps pumping that sewage into society! Including the United Nations of which our present administration focuses more on the mission of the UN than the State of our Nation! I say buy them all a ticket, send them home, and push the building over into the river!

@George: This is because liberals believe that Blacks are inferior to whites and are therefore unable to keep from having sex when they want it; they are unable to find and hold a job; if things are difficult for them, they will just say, “Aw shucks” and go rob a liquor store.

This also explains why liberals are in favor of abortion, particularly because it kills mostly black children.

Definition of Emancipation Proclamation: Free from my hands but not my control, simply said that it became painfully obvious that it would be much easier to control the minds of the slave , then to keep them physically restrained. By maintaining the poverty level the highest being in the black communities, but we are the one’s that spends most of our dollars back into the economy then any other race . We are the only race that will not recycle their own dollar amongst themselves. Which means that is there is no unity, trust and therefore no success that is built among us. The same as when the slave master had our ancestors under the physical control. nihil sub sōle novum(“there is nothing new under the sun”). In order for us to be productive part of society, we have to be allowed to be successful within our own communities. The black man is not able to find employment, where as the black woman can more easily obtain employment, therefore taking the trust in the black man away from the black woman. The same as during slavery when the black man was beat in front his family, to demonstrate his lack of ability to protect his family from any harm, or when a pregnant slave was strung up and her belly slit open and when the fetus fell to the ground the head smashed by the boot heel of the slavemaster in front of the man, to show him his lack of control. This was the early success stories of the destruction of the black family.

hi,
so sad to read your comment,
i refuse to think there was no chance to recover, for this new generation,
unless they are constantly turned on the PAST,
WHY WOULD PARENTS AND BLACK LEADERS TELL THEM SUCH DEFEATING STORY TO GAGE THEIR LIFE ON,
BUT NOT ALL THE BLACKS DID IT, LOOK AT THOSE WHO RISE UP WITH SUCH BRIGHT SOUL,
FULL OF HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, THIS ONE CLOSEST TO ALL THE BLACK IS OUR HERMAN CAIN,AND THOSE TEA PARTY ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE IN 2010 WHICH FOR ONE CAN TALK FASTER THEN ANYONE I KNOW, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH GRETA THE OTHER DAY,
among many other successful blacks, but on the whole they really are just AMERICANS,
no other adjectives which is always pounded on them by the
democrats as if they want those AMERICANS TO BE STILL FEELING INFERIOR ONLY BECAUSE THEY
ARE BLACK,
DID YOU NOTICE THIS IS DONE MOSTLY BY OTHER BLACKS, and after all theses century,
you see the AMERICAN WHITE NOT EVEN THINK OF COLOR ANYMORE, WHEN THEY SEE A BLACK SKIN AMERICAN, THEY ONLY THINK AN AMERICAN JUST LIKE ALL OTHER,
SO SAD THE REVEREND WRIGHT STYLE OF PREACHING WAS SO DEVASTATING FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY WHO WHERE TAKEN HOSTAGE BY BLACK LEADERSHIP TO KEEP THEM UNDER THEIR OWN CONTROL THEY WOULD HAVE SAID ANYTHING FOR FEAR OF LOOSING THEIR HOLD ON THEM ,
THEY ARE STILL DOING IT TODAY, DIRECTLY FROM THE WHITE HOUSE.
BUT YET LOOK AT THE GIFTED ACTORS AND SINGER AND JOURNALIST AND BUSYNESS OWNERS
AND SKILLED WORKERS, WHO GOT AWAY FROM THAT CONTROL, THEY ALSO LEFT THE PAST TO WHERE IT BELONG UNDER THE TONS OF EARTH, AND RISE UP TOWARD THE ARISEN IN THE FUTURE, AND CONQUER ON TOP OF MANY WHITES AMERICANS LESS GIFTED THAN THEY ARE,
SO BETWEEN US THERE IS ONLY THE FACT TO EDUCATE THE YOUNG WITH LOVE NOT HATE FOR THE PAST, AND NO HATE FOR THE WHITE, BUT FOR THEIR IMPORTANT NEED TO RISE UNTO THEIR OWN CONQUEST OF THE FUTURE WITH JOY AND THE ELEVATE SPIRIT OF THEIR SOUL
NOTHING ELSE.

JV Hoffman, that was so much true and very well said,
thank you
