It’s for the children [Reader Post]

Whenever money is at stake, teachers’ unions invariably resort to the emotional canard of

“It’s for the children.”

But inevitably when the budget ax falls, it always falls on whatever the children like the most. Generally, teachers’ unions are so avaricious that they would rather see positions eliminated rather than accept a small sacrifice. Chris Christie proved that last fall. Democrats even cut funding for food stamps in order to stuff $24 million into teachers’ unions.

Well, they’re at it again and where else but in Chicago?

Taxpayers Send Teachers To Vegas Resort

The city of Chicago has a budget shortfall of $700 million and they celebrate that deficit by sending teachers to Las Vegas. A spokesman said that the “conference was required for educational development plans and procedures were followed.”

Chicago schools have a pretty interesting set of procedures.

Tax dollars were spent on champagne costing $125 a bottle; thousands more on limousines, steak lunches and a food and liquor bill from a Soldier Field skybox event that alone cost more than $6,000.

Scammon Elementary School sent 14 teachers on an all-expense paid trip to a conference last fall. The principal tagged along and was absent for report card pick-up day.

It is also alleged that at Scammon some special education students were packed into a room last fall without proper supervision and sex acts took place.

Chicago might consider renaming that school to “Scammin’ Elementary.” But remember- it’s for the children.

You know I quit listening to that mantra aloooong time ago. It’s for the Teachers Unions the ‘Children’ get a tiny percentage ‘if’ they are lucky . And what kills me is the Left are always crying about ‘how terrible’ Capitalism is. The Left’s “Greed” knows no bounds… ESPECIALLY , Especially, when it’s ” other peoples” Money…. The hypocrisy is Stunning isn’t it?

Chris Christy is standing up to the Unions and I say it’s about time! He has turned the whole system upside down and rightly so… Finally someone who is not using the Almighty Dollar as a band-aid….

So, the NJ Food Stamp vs the Teachers Union is a ironic story. Especially since the ‘very essence’ of ‘helping’ those in ‘need’ comes from the Teachings of the very same people (Teachers) and the “social justice” credo. Gee, when push comes to shove they sure cast their own mantra aside pretty quickly!! Hypocrites!

The Liberals stink keeps coming true!

When NEA General Counsel, Bob Chanin stepped down and retired from his duties at the NEA, he made some surprising statements.

Dues, Not Education, Are Our Top Priority

Despite what some among us would like to believe it is not because of our creative ideas; it is not because of the merit of our positions; it is not because we care about children; and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child.

The NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power. And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of million of dollars in dues each year because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them; the union that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees.

This is not to say that the concern of NEA and its affiliates with closing achievement gaps, reducing drop rate rates, improving teacher quality, and the like are unimportant or inappropriate. To the contrary these are the goals that guide the work we do. But they need not and must not be achieved at the expense of due process, employee rights, or collective bargaining.

That is simply too high a price to pay.

So there you have it. From the man at the top, himself.

Mark Levin, top rated Conservative talk show host, former Assistant AG to Edwin Meese in the Reagan administration, and President of Landmark Legal Foundation brought this speech to the attention of his audiences nearly 2 years ago. I remembered and dug it up for this thread.

Levin has sat as opposing counsel to Chanin in the past many times. Mostly because the NEA has been found guilty of using union dues for direct political contributions. He said that Chanin didn’t think too highly of him, and if you listen to Chanin’s remarks, he mentions (with disdain) Landmark Legal Foundation.

I love it when you whisper those seductive words, “Mark Levin”, into my ear, anticsrocks…. LOL

The LAUSD can teach Chicago a thing or two about corruption. It is so bad here, the waste, fraud and downright degeneracy, it’s disgusting.

Do not get me started about teaching, unions, and public schools. I could go on for days.

As a new teacher I managed to avoid joining the local teachers’ union. It has been a continuous struggle, starting when I was still working on my state credential, and involving a sparring match via email with my alma mater’s Dean of the School of Education. The newest union tactic is to get university students who are working toward a teaching credential to join the teachers’ union before they become teachers. Before they even have jobs. Get them signed up and paying dues while they are still in college. Day-um, there is no end to union greed…

@Mata – Awww, shucks. 😉

It always has been about the NEA first and foremost. If it was about the children, the children would be receiving a decent education. Most kids today are lucky if they come out of high school at an equivalent 1960s eighth grade level.
