Now Obama Wants To Wiretap Your Email [Reader Post]

Loading

My, how things change.

Or not.

Remember this?

Eliminate Warrantless Wiretaps. Barack Obama opposed the Bush Administration’s initial policy on warrantless wiretaps because it crossed the line between protecting our national security and eroding the civil liberties of American citizens. As president, Obama would update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to provide greater oversight and accountability to the congressional intelligence committees to prevent future threats to the rule of law.

Naturally, that went the way of all Obama promises:

On the campaign trail, Barack Obama harshly criticized Bush administration policies allowing warrantless wiretaps. But, since he assumed office as president, Obama’s Justice Department has attempted to deny a private organization the right to sue the federal government for wiretapping communications without court authorization.

Ironically, more and more people are missing the old days:

In Warrantless Wiretapping Case, Obama DOJ’s New Arguments Are Worse Than Bush’s

We had hoped this would go differently.

Friday evening, in a motion to dismiss Jewel v. NSA, EFF’s litigation against the National Security Agency for the warrantless wiretapping of countless Americans, the Obama Administration made two deeply troubling arguments.

First, they argued, exactly as the Bush Administration did on countless occasions, that the state secrets privilege requires the court to dismiss the issue out of hand. They argue that simply allowing the case to continue “would cause exceptionally grave harm to national security.” As in the past, this is a blatant ploy to dismiss the litigation without allowing the courts to consider the evidence.

It’s an especially disappointing argument to hear from the Obama Administration. As a candidate, Senator Obama lamented that the Bush Administration “invoked a legal tool known as the ‘state secrets’ privilege more than any other previous administration to get cases thrown out of civil court.” He was right then, and we’re dismayed that he and his team seem to have forgotten.

Not content with phones, Obama wants to wiretap your email:

WASHINGTON – Federal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations of the Internet, arguing that their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is “going dark” as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone.

And that’s a lot of stuff!

Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters such as BlackBerry, social networking websites such as Facebook and software that allows direct “peer-to-peer” messaging such as Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages.

Even some lefties noticed Obama says one thing and does another:

Again, the gulf between Candidate Obama and President Obama is striking. As a candidate, Obama ran promising a new era of government transparency and accountability, an end to the Bush DOJ’s radical theories of executive power, and reform of the PATRIOT Act. But, this week, Obama’s own Department Of Justice has argued that, under the PATRIOT Act, the government shall be entirely unaccountable for surveilling Americans in violation of its own laws.

Republicans are understandably outraged at this new invasion. One even wrote:

On wiretapping, Obama isn’t listening to the Constitution

THE PRESIDENT is not above the law; he is not King Barack. Yet, with sorrow, we are now learning that in this great land we have an administration that has refused to follow well-crafted, longstanding procedures that require the president to get a court order before spying on people within the United States. With outrage, we learn that this administration believes that it does not have to follow the law of the land.

Not just above the law, this administration seems to be saying that it IS the law. It contends that it can decide on its own what the law is, how to interpret it, and whether or not it has to follow it. I believe that such an arrogant and expansive view of executive power would have sent chills down the spines of our Founding Fathers — as it does for every American hearing these startling revelations today.

The president, the vice president, the secretary of state, and the attorney general tell us that the president can order domestic spying inside this country — without judicial oversight — under his power as commander in chief. Really? Where do they find that in the Constitution? Time and time again, this president has used his express, but limited, constitutional power to command the military to justify controversial activities — after the fact.

Actually, that was Ted Kennedy writing about George Bush, but the irony was inescapable.

He doesn’t have to make sense, he’s the King of Amerika!

I think the most important thing about this post is how well it points out the Left/Right convergence of opinion against Obama that is so damaging to Obama.

I was recently amazed by a very liberal blog taking a very anti-Obama stance on the idea of killing Anwar al-Awlaki (sp varies).

Here is an except:

Obama’s extraordinary claim he has the power to order the assassination of any American, anytime, and anywhere puts him on a par with King George III, Ivan the Terrible, and other tyrants throughout history that held the power of life and death over their subjects.

Obama has set himself above the Constitution, as an American Barrack The Terrible, with the power to detain us indefinitely, torture us, and assassinate us at his will. Obama is not like Bush, he is far worse: he is a tyrant and a threat to the American people.

FireDogLake

And that’s just one example.
You certainly found another good one.

Lately both Biden and Obama are berating their own constituents to ”stop whining!” and that being lethargic as voters was ”inexcusable.”

They are fighting their own base.
And they are not winning.

Yeah, but is your library card safe?

Yeah, but is your library card safe?

Probably not….but it hasn’t been for some time.

I think the problem is with government not just the Obama administration, or one particular political party over the other. The sad part is that everything is already in place, they are just waiting for the reason to put the plans into action.

Anyone else notice that Husein is HOLDING THE PHONE UPSIDE DOWN!!!! Probably talking to John Boehner, or just a nice bit of stagecraft for CNN….Obama SOOOOO busy doing important things for the “little people.”

i noticed the phone being upside down immediately. just another photo-op for obumbles.

@ OLDPUPPYMAX, #6:

Actually, that photo was taken during a telephone conversation President-elect Obama had with President George W. Bush.

This is the “most intelligent man ever in the White House”, hardly!

I didn’t notice that the clock was at “3am”, and I didn’t notice the website name IMAO.US either. 🙄

Does it look like there’s a man’s left arm leaning on his hand under the desk?

What was scary was the news of an idea circulating that the administration should have the right to shut down the Internet in case of a ____. What? Has any administration ever asked for the right to shut down phone or television service in case of a ____. No.

One would think that the reason administrations such as Obama’s communists pigs don’t shut down phone service is because it is basic to life and safety in personal or civil emergencies. But what about the Internet “telephones”. People actually rely on the Internet for basic communication and safety services ON THE INTERNET. The Obama DOPES can’t possibly want to shut down the Internet at will and hope it doesn’t cause problems.

So much for hopey-changey. Have you had enough? Most Americans have, too. Even democrats who used to support Obama are abandoning him and his DUMB ideas.

If only his ideas were just DUMB…

plainjane31, hi, yes, that would be a catastrophic error,to even try,
I mean for him and his crew, even more, I don’t think he should follow this for his own sake.
OF course to even mention it, tell a lot of his love for AMERICA,
SPECIALY, with those border wide open, and getting more every day,
wit disease coming all over the nation, I don’t think he care.

Post #13:

Even democrats who used to support Obama are abandoning him and his DUMB ideas.

When Obama spoke at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 2008, around 17,000 supporters turned out. The crowd that assembed to hear him there a few hours ago was estimated by campus police to have exceeded 26,000.

I live 20 minutes outside of Madison and you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a libtard…I honestly think we are in a contest with Berkeley CA to see who can be the most retarded/brain dead city in the country…

In other words Greg, no great accomplishment, send him someplace middle of the road and watch the turn out…Crowing about the turnout in a liberal bastion like Madison is nothing special…

UW Madison and UC Berkeley students are probably a bit more on the ball than the average dead cat swinger. Both universities are independently rated among the top 50 in the world. In 2009, UC Berkeley was rated no. 3 in the world, just behind Harvard and Stanford, respectively.

The local radio hyped the visit this way:

“….The National along with singer-songwriter Ben Harper will be the opening acts for Obama…..”

Of course, like in Germany, the addition of ROCK BANDS helped pump up the numbers in the audience.
Even I have gone to free concerts in the past.

After some arm-twisting even Russ Feingold came to the Madison rally.
He, however, never shared the stage with Obama.

Feingold spoke for a few minutes and left the stage.

Then, Tom Barrett was up next to introduce Obama.

Feingold never was on stage standing with Obama.

@Greg

As rated by liberals. It’s not called “Jerkeley” for nothing.

The crowd that assembed to hear him there a few hours ago was estimated by campus police to have exceeded 26,000.

It was a crowd of mostly students who probably were given A’s in their courses to go out to see the One. A group of mushheads who haven’t the first notion of what life is or what responsibility is.

The perfect Obama supporters.

OLDPUPPYMAX : HI, you know, only a ROBOT would make a mistake,
to hold a phone UPSIDE DOWN, is he one of them,
