Ms Bees, I am at 7800 feet for another week or so. I hate to sound like a weakling; but the air is thin, I am overweight and I will be 65 in a couple of years. Twenty years ago, I worked up here and went jogging after dinner: those days are over. I especially feel guilty because of OT being in the war and I can’t even walk up stairs without breathing hard. Damn this getting old straight to Hell!

I just came back from driving down the mountain a ways to make cellular calls and on the way back a mother fox and two kits ran in front of my car and danced all around for awhile, it was fun to watch. Of course I slammed on the brakes and I hope they learn to be more wary of vehicles. They were Red foxes with white tips on their tails. I thought of you, when I saw them.

I have no recipes for bear; actually, I can’t even stay in a house that is cooking bear. You see after you skin a bear they look very human-like. If practical, I eat the heart of Grizzlies: we used to believe that you can capture some of the bear’s courage that way. It’s an old Indian tale I suppose; but some of those legends are based in truth and I am careful not to tempt fate or cross the ancients. Better safe than sorry.

My best recipe for Grizzly heart is to cook it in a Dutch Oven with coarse onions and turnips. You will need biscuits on the side. To cook bear roast, I think you will need to check out the recipes carefully because of the strong gamy flavor that bear has. The heart is easy.

My black bear hides that had no commercial value were useful; I would place a fresh hide, hair side up, in front of a feed trough in a pasture with my two year olds and yearlings. I then poured in a half gallon of cracked oats. If the little buggers wanted to eat oats they had to stand on the bear hide. There was always one who said, “the Hell with that bear hide, I am eating oats.” He would walk over and the rest of them had to listen while he was grinding those oats into oat meal. The next day they were pushing each other out of the way to stand on that bear hide and eat oats.

A mountain horse that spooks at bears will get you killed, so it was imperative to have them cool, calm, and collected around bears; consequently, this was an important part of training. I also started firing my rifle near them until I could target shoot without them lifting their head. Most of my training methods are nothing more than letting the horse train itself with very little input from me, it’s much safer that way!

To get back on topic, I love and respect the Flag; every time I see one of those flag triangles in a customer’s home, my heart skips a beat.

Although it’s not the sort of thing that really matters to most people these days, I believe what you’re describing may not be legal. Flags of nations are supposed to indicate territorial ownership. It used to be and probably still is against US law to fly the flag of another nation above the US flag at your place (unless you’re actually an embassy or somesuch). Foreign citizenship does not mean you get to claim your pad as the territory of a foreign power.
I’m not a lawyer, though, so I could be all wrong on this.

On the subject of being forced to take down the US flag: All of these places were CONTROLLED housing areas. They all have signed contracts that forbid display of the flag. If they didn’t know it was in the contract then they should have read the whole thing. When you are on private property you are under their rules. A person can also choose not to live in such a place.

I live in an apartment and can’t display the flag. If I owned controlled property I would allow the display of NATIONAL flags. In other words, residents could display the flag of the country they are a citizen of but no other. The size and how it is displayed would be regulated. I think it would be interesting to see the different national flags.

@ogee: I’m going to hold off judgement on this one. It could be fake, and just because you belong to a gay bath doesn’t mean your are gay. There could have been political reasons they joined. There are enough things to frown about this administration that I will just wait on this one.
