Wow... this was two years ago Veteran's Day. How nice some of you decided to revisit it. And your comments, of course, gave me the heads up to go back to this post. Oddly enough, I enjoyed it as much, rereading it today, as when I did the original research. It was truly an era that benefited from their very unique skills.

I swear, sometimes we forget more than we ever knew. And archives are a great reminder when the brain just loses some of the data.

Old One, I envy your luck to have experienced the first hand stories at the feet of one of these warriors. Perhaps you could pen what you heard in a reader's post for us all.

Nearly a year ago I met the widow & son of one of the code talkers who had passed away some months before on a trip to Nevada & Arizona. The widow gave me an autographed photo card he had signed before he died. We had a great conversation for a couple of hours on her husband's experiences & life.

Excellent presentation and well researched. Great Job Mata!

Now, Please bear in mind that in 1942 the US Armed Forces were 100% Segregated.
Those Code Talkers were looked upon as an experiment until they got results. The Talkers
were folks from Reservations and small communities that took great pride in Service despite
the way they may have been treated at home.

Their record is nothing less than stellar in encrypting, sending, decrypting and receiving messages. A great many of them were out in Combat Units where the risks were great so they were in fact both "communicators' and shooters as well. It was and still is Corps doctrine that every Marine is a rifleman first.

Delayed recognition is better than none at all, I reckon. They were not Career Military. They were Americans that were called upon for their specific skills, served well and went home deserving of more of a welcome than they received but as the Military was segregated until 1948 and they were not viewed as Middle America they had to wait for honors.

As a sidebar, an all Black, Negro was the term, Parachute Infantry Regiment, the 555 or triple nickel was trained for combat as Airborne Infantry but served the US Forest Service as Smoke Jumpers during the war because that was the old segregated Army of those days. They had White Officers and NCOs but did not get to fight.

Blacks in the Navy served as cooks, mess stewards and stevedores. The Tuskegee Pilots were viewed as an experiment until Elenore Roosevelt championed their Right to Fight and won. They too achieved greatness escorting Sky Trains of Bombers over Europe and saw air combat.

Times have changed but America needs to honor its Defenders, remember their deeds and never forget their Heroes regardless of their tint of skin pigment or gender. We have A-10 pilots that are Female flying CAS in the Stans right now and those on the ground are always happy to see them. Believe it!

There were several other languages used for coding. Does anyone have a list of them? I believe there were about 18.

I'm genuinely happy that you all enjoyed the walk back thru the history of the Code Talkers origins, just as I did revisiting the story. I've known it for awhile, but when researching this article, picked up even more about it.

Alifa, you are correct that the Navajo Code Talkers were just one of 18 tribes that were involved in our WWII communications coding. This is why, in the 4th paragraph of my post, that I specifically said I certainly didn't intend to slight the 17 other tribes... another two which you didn't mention were the Sioux and the Meskwaki. This wasn't even confined to Native American Tribes as there were 30 some Jesuits in Hiroshima, jai alai players in China and the Phillipines and some Falange supporters in Asia who did the same using the Basque language. However the Navajo parallel program ended up being the preferred.

Key to this particular story... and as I said, not to diminish the others that followed suit and performed herculean communication feats... was it's origins. And it was the original 29 Navajo, in tandem with Phillip Johnston, who were the first to be utilized and were the creators of the codes using their language. For this reason, they are the most well known. I am quite sure that the other tribes then followed suit with their own languages, which must have thoroughly confused the enemy. All in all, it's quite a story.

And to add more fodder about the other tribes that I did not focus on here, Grassley has been lobbying to award the Meskwaki code talkers with the Congressional Medal since 2004. In Feb 2008, near the beginning of that year's session, <a href="http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s110-2681" rel="nofollow"><b>James Inohofe (R-OK) introduced S 2681, The Code Talkers Recognition Act of 2008.</b></a> It had 73 co-sponsors... 31 Republicans, 40 Democrats and 2 Independents. Probably the most bi-partisan Senate sponsoring we've seen of late.

It was read twice, and then sent on to Chris Dodd's Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee... where it never emerged. When 74 of 100 Senators co-sponsor a bill, one has to wonder why the heck it just disappears in the committee toilet bowls.
