Well, moose, it looks like it’s bipartisan stupidity on this issue. Considering that there *was* oversight for Fannie/Freddie, but Barney and company thwarted any attempts in 2004-2005 to stem the damage because he refused to see it (must have been his personal piles of cash blocking his view….), then one answer is to actually use the oversight already in place.

But for the most part, we’re about to have some serious problems with Congressional interference and supposed oversight, but this time for any private financial business that is outside of what the omnipotent money czar, Timothy Geithner, already has over the banking institutions. You might say this is sister legislation for a government take over of financial institutions that they do not control with TARP. Consider this TARP’s little brother to widen the control net.

So I guess, to determine if we are on “common ground”… which is always rare moments that are welcomed… we’d have to explore if you’re cool with the TARP take over. I am not. And in fact many citizens of the liberal bent were not either.

Now, compound the Treasury power with Bernanke’s Fed Reserve power… ala the Treasury spending of the MBSs, keeping rates artificially low and investment money artificially high. When the free ride ends in October, we’ll genuinely find out if the economy is recovering, and if it can stand without the Fed printing presses crutches.

Depending on how Bernanke manages to maneuver us thru inflation/stagflation and everything else on the horizon, we may or may not have recovery. What would be *very* helpful is if the ARRA/stimulus funds that are *not* spent as of now were reversed, and that amount not added to our national debt. This would ease some of the inflation and devaluation of the dollar on our horizon.

Considering this “reform” – which is really another power grab into the private sector – is concentrating power in the hands of either Congressional idiots like Frank (with responsibility for our recession), or into the hands of the Fed (also bearing resonsibility with rate controls under Greenspan, then Bernanke), it’s like saying reform is controlled by clowns to the left of us, or jokers on the right.

Mata: We may be on common ground on this issue, the Republicans should take an active approach with the Democrats to deal with the financial stability issues, if they just lay back and hope for failure on this issue for political reasons, that is to everyone’s detriment and is an abdication of their responsibility.

The Dems have offered their “solutions”, what are the Republicans proposals on this issue?
I haven’t heard about any from them, but it could be because I haven’t dug into it enough to find out…..
