Exactly love, my point was that I am being forced into it, rather than asked, and to add insult to injury they are going to make me pay for the priviledge of being screwed too. And actually Greg that is the problem with Medicare, they take hefty premiums, but in most cases the person covered still has to pay with what little the have left. Medicare is not an inclusive insurance they have four parts, and you have no choice but to enroll in them all, and there are exorbitant fees for every one. They want to take their checks back under the guise of “helping people”, that shouldnt be allowed. Not to mention, if someone has private insurance such as I do, Medicare is not the primary payer, that private insurance is. They are supposed to cover the slack but then tell you that they dont cover the things that are left over. Such as scripts, so what am I paying for?

I am running into this problem now! Injured in an auto accident, I had to go on disability. I have private insurance via my kids father as we havent legally separated, and I have state insurance. One would think this is enough right? Wrong! I am being forced into medicare even though I have insurance and have refused it. I refused it, so they contacted the insurances I do have and announced that I am eligable for Medicare and refused it. These insurances have now decided that they wont cover me unless I enroll in Medicare first! So lets see, I support two kids off of $700 a month, and now they want to take $200 for a premium for an insurance I dont want or need? Almost makes you wonder if this isnt some government scam to recoup some of their loses! Don’t get me wrong I am lucky and I know it to have what I have, but there are people out there who cant get any insurance and our government is forcing me to have three? That they are giving away/forcing us to take their insurance makes no sense to me! I have heart medicine I needed a month and a half ago, but since they are playing this insurance game, I cant get it! I’m sure when my 7 yr old and 14 yr old are at my funeral, they will be so grateful that I was forced into Medicare, and by doing so messed up my prescriptions…

I’m not Medicare age yet, but I am a chiropractor who has treated Medicare patients for the last 26 years. Did you know that chiropractors can no longer opt out of Medicare? If a Medicare patient wants to see a chiropractor out-of-the-system, he can not. The federal goverment wants to know. It seems very wrong that a person doesn’t have that option. Even if a patient signed over his Medicare to a HMO that will not pay the chiropractor. We still have to submit a bill to Medicare that will not be payed. Everyone’s choices and freedoms are being taken away.

This is the information I’ve been looking for for such a long time!  Until a few years ago I just assumed I could keep my existing insurance after I reached the age of 65.  Then I learned from insurance brokers that I could not, though they never could really explain the ins and outs.  It turns out that it’s not a question of my getting booted from my coverage when I hit 65, but of my insurance carrier’s not being able to continue my coverage if I’m also covered by MediCare.  Then I got the idea that I had no choice about being covered by MediCare.  Now I guess the story is that I do have a choice, if I’m willing to forfeit the monthly Social Security benefits I’ve been paying for throughout my working life.  A rotten choice, but still one worth considering.

Even today, the number of doctors willing to take MediCare is dropping steadily.  As things are, I can always go to a doctor who has opted out of MediCare and pay him in cash.  The only problem for me was that it seemed I would be unable to continue buying a good low-premium high-deductible private insurance policy to protect me if my cash medical bills reached catastrophic levels some year.  It seems I will be able to do that, if I can budget not only to continue my monthly health insurance premiums but also just factor the expected Social Security payment out of my budget.  Well, shoot, who in his right mind thinks that system won’t be broke by the time I’m 65?  Or that I won’t be means-tested out of it?

I deal with seniors every day and I sure don’t hear much praise for Medicare. I’ve also found too many doctors do not want to deal with Medicare patients, which is heart breaking. Fortunately there are some doctors who are truly dedicated and give them samples of expensive medications they couldn’t afford otherwise.
I’ve learned you can save, save, save, your whole life and a single bout with a serious medical illness or injury can wipe that out. As my father has told me, getting old isn’t for sissies. It’s only in the last few years I’m seeing how right he was.
