Well, it wasn’t said in the article, but I thought it was clearly implied that it was accepted as an apology. Perhaps I’m wrong.
The flowers came with a note from Gates, the contents of which Murphy would not disclose.
“[Whalen] said that she really appreciated it,” Murphy said. “She’s been getting a lot of apologies and people have been saying nice things.”
And no, I personally don’t think it’s sexist or insulting to buy a woman flowers. I’ve done so for female coworkers I’ve fought with on occasion myself. It ALWAYS went over well.
Although now I prefer to propagate some of my houseplants and give them as gifts to both genders.
Well, since she has respectably chosen to keep their correspondence private, neither of us really know. So, we just differ in our opinions. (if you’d like to smooth this over, I like Red Lillies or Black Bush – take your pick!)
P.S. Has Prof. Gates “apologized” to the black Police Officer Lashley who was called an “Uncle Tom” and a “traitor?” You suppose he’ll send him tulips too?
They are both beautiful, Mike. I think I prefer the first, though I have a friend who directs for a theatre where you live. If I ever get out there, I’d love to see your garden.
And just why did I have to “smooth this over?”
I was being facetious. Just kidding with you, pal!

Lashley was absolutely right to defend his colleague, but unless Gates was the one who called him those things, he doesn’t owe him anything. They had nothing to do with each other. Whalen was looking out for Gate’s property and thus deserved at least as much as what he did for her.
@Cary: Come on out to the garden anytime you are down this way. But you get good dose of conservative philosophy to go along with the plants.
Gates should apologize to Lashley and to America. He stirred this pot.
Until we hold the racebaiters accountable they are going to keep right on doing this.
Anyone remember the Tawanna Brawley hoax (Cary is too young). It made Al Sharpton famous and destroyed the career of a white police officer even though the hoax was exposed.
And how about those Duke LaCrosse players? How much money did their families spend to keep them from being falsely prosecuted for rape?
And what about the Claremont McKenna College psychology professor Kerri Dunn, who had told police that her car was vandalized as she spoke at a March 9 forum on racism, was identified by two eyewitnesses as the person who damaged the auto.
And… and…and…and….
Until these folks are held accountable and until the “news” media stops taking the word of the accuser the instant one of these incidents happens we will see these kinds of things continue.
And guess who suffers from these false charges? The very people the racebaiters claim to represent.
@Cary: How do you get from an “expression of gratitude” to an apology?
And isn’t it a bit patronizing, sexist even, to send a woman he doesn’t know a bunch of flowers?
What would he say if someone sent him a watermelon or a bucket of fried chicken?

,
And frankly, as a person of Irish descent, while it may be stereotypical, I would LOVE a six pack of beer or a bottle of whiskey as a gift!
@Cary: Your implied apology is wishful thinking. Gates wouldn’t apologize to “whitey.”

@Cary: I grow two types of red lilies:

looks like my reply was eaten by the filter monster!
