Secretary of Defense Flip Flops On North Korea; Now It IS A Threat

Loading

Yep, when the Obama Administration’s envoy to the regional security conference in Singapore was getting ready to leave, he flat out said North Korea’s nuclear test, SEVEN missile tests, it’s end of the 50+yr cease-fire, it’s threat to attack ANY ship trying to contain their weapons sales, and it’s threat to attack the UN if sanctions are imposed….yeah, Gates said they’re not a threat (after raising the threat level of American forces in the region).

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, en route to an annual security summit in Singapore Friday, signaled as much, saying North Korea’s actions so far do not warrant sending more US troops to the region.

“I don’t think that anybody in the [Obama] administration thinks there is a crisis,” Mr. Gates told reporters aboard his military jet early Friday morning, still Thursday night in Washington.

THEN he landed in Singapore, and announced that North Korea IS a threat, and that the US will not stand for a nuclear-armed North Korea. Seriously, could the Obama Administration’s diplomatic handling of the North Korean threat be more incompetent, fragmented, leaderless, ineffective, and (albeit in a dark way) laughable?

North Korea’s nuclear program and actions constitute a threat to regional peace and security. We unequivocally reaffirm our commitment to the defense of our allies in the region,” Gates said in Singapore

So much for “ready to lead on Day 1.” Pres. Obama got a 3am call months ago, and still hasn’t answered the clue phone let alone the red phone.

I was at a loss on the initial comments, but then he turns around while speaking overseas. This has just gotten out of control. No crisis. Cutting weapons. Knocking 15% of the missile defense budget while killing 2 parts of it and hamstringing the ABL. Good move, how Gates can stand by and watch this is amazing.

It’s all ideology withe these crap weasels, no matter who gets hurt in the process.

I agree with the administration that NK is not a threat to the homeland, and any claims that it is are laughable. It is a threat to SK though. But NK has been making these threats for years.

I think containment and bribes at this point are the most feasible actions USA can take. Thanks in no small part to 8 years of Bush’s thumb-twiddling and cowboy diplomacy.

Way to prove Bill-TB’s point Bryan.
Bryan, NK IS a threat to America now that they have nukes. If they give one to terrorists we could see a mushroom cloud blossom over an American city. Live in denial all you want, but that is a fact.
Not to mention with their improvement in missile tech, they WILL be a bigger threat in the immediate future.
So keep your head shoved where the sun doesn’t shine since it makes you feel better about doing nothing and blaming Bush for a situation Klinton allowed to happen. Really, let us folks who aren’t mentally ill liberals (redundant) handle these things. Thinking rationally clearly isn’t your strong suit.

I guess Obama got a rude phone call and possibly a nasty communique from Japan’s Prime Minister and South Korea’s prime minister, and possibly from Taiwan as well, and then Mr. Great Thinker, informed Secy Gates that the Administration’s prior non crisis statement was inoperative.
If it’s Saturday there must be a crisis, until the politburo rules again. One wonders how long Gates will want to do these abrupt reversals of policy statements and be humiliated because Obama and Biden can’t get their act together? I mean poor TOTUS could only take four months before committing suicide; but then TOTUS had more of a conscience and intellect than Gates.

it’s things like these i would like to buy my self a nuke and go my self into USA and blow every block ! look at what this dude said Gates ! ” constitute a threat to regional peace and security ” USA has over 1000 bases around the world. American actions in iraq and so many other countries constitute a real threat to regional peace and security in this world. we should stop asking why americans need so many bases. we know already the answer they want to be the world police but nobody has elected these idiots into world office !

” North Korea’s nuclear program and actions constitute a threat to regional peace and security ”

i hope some UFO comes down and blows everybody into hell! gov of the world have to be removed so we all can progress forward.

Seeing as how we are technically still at War with North Korea, I don’t know how anyone in the US, let alone the SoD, can say they are not a threat.

Off our meds again, josh? Really, GFY then ESAD.

“Bryan, NK IS a threat to America now that they have nukes. If they give one to terrorists we could see a mushroom cloud blossom over an American city. Live in denial all you want, but that is a fact.”

Haha just like it was a fact when Iraq was the scapegoat?

Thanks but that ship’s credibility sailed and sank looooong ago!

Bryan, South Korea and Japan are Allies. When You do not support Allies, they resent that and We currently have enough Enemies already. Nuclear weapons in the hands of Dictators or unstable Governments is a very bad idea that never has a happy ending. Your logic is flawed.

When did I say I do not support SK? Read my comment again — I absolutely said NK is a threat to SK.

I said the claim that NK is a threat to *USA* is laughable.

Ummm Bryan, are you saying the CONFIRMED nuke test by NK somehoew means they don’t have nukes? Really, you must be off your meds too little boy. Enjoying not having to go to elementary school? Go back to DUNG or KOS.

Clearly you have a reading problem. NK’s possession of nukes is not a threat to USA, end of story.

I would support military action against NK if only the reason is to protect South Korea from current and future threats. I would protest any military action against NK that claims to be protecting the homeland.

President Obama has a lot more credibility in international issues than the previous administration so I would probably support an all out destruction of NK if he sells it the right way.

@Bryan:

I said the claim that NK is a threat to *USA* is laughable.

Clearly you have a reading problem. NK’s possession of nukes is not a threat to USA, end of story.

Ummm…..are you sure about that?

South Korean news reports say North Korea appears to be preparing to test-fire a long-range missile.

The reports Monday cite unidentified South Korean officials as saying the North has moved its most advanced long-range missile – capable of reaching the U.S. state of Alaska – to a west coast launch site, and could conduct a launch this month.

Another meme shattered.

Sorry ’bout that.

What’s partisan about me wanting to nuke NK?
