There's no need to re-invent the wheel. Piracy is an ancient problem with an ancient solution: pirate boarders are repelled; captured pirates are hung on the spot, pure and simple. They are NEVER paid off. The logic of "Once you pay the Danegeld, you never get rid of the Dane" isn't limited to snowy climes. For those who fear our defense may embolden more pirate retaliation, Rumsfeld's famous metric bears consideration: "Are we killing them faster than we're creating them?" I say let's try it for a while and see. .

The wrong reaction would be to perceive the escalation in violence as "blowback" for daring to defend our interests and protect ourselves last weekend.
