Don’t sweat the polls; fight them instead. Do what you can to change public opinion through letters to the editor, feedback to television news reporters, etc. to emphasize the point that the current economic crisis is not due to defects in the theory of capitalism. Instead, point out the illegal acts of the minority of crooks in government and at the upper levels of management in corporations around the world. Excessive manipulation of markets did nothing to improve things, but simply added to the existing problems. Also recognize that collusion between Congress and special interest groups (especially the banking industry) resulted in loopholes being built into legislation to benefit the “ruling elite” (government officials and corporate executives.) The result over the last several decades was to increase the wealth and power of the ruling elite while at the same time reducing government’s representation of the people.

Our constitutional guarantees have been trampled by both major parties in government for decades. Instead of partisan bickering, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents need to come together to reformulate a government that returns constitutional protections AND the control of government back to the people. Once we remove the riff-raff (and the waste associated with them) from government and government institutions, we will be in a much better position to truly reform government so that it protects civil rights of the people, takes care of the “truly” unfortunate, and rewards diligence and hard work. I prefer such a “progressive” government that upholds and rewards personal responsibility, diligence, hard work, and equal protections under the law.

Great post Steve. Socia(Environmenta)lism is one of the most dangerous political trends of the last 100 years. It has never been about ecological conservation, and it has always been about economic liberalism. The recent poll that showed only 53% of Americans believe that capitalism is the best economic plan for America is a scary indicator that the far lefts plan to socialize the American economy, and the world economy, is taking hold.
