Thanks Wisdom. It sounds like it may be the Lead America organization the only difference being that my granddaughter said she will be attending in May while the site said the conference is in June but dates could change, maybe it has. I e-mailed the link to my daughter and asked her to confirm, now I’m excited again.

@Missy: More than likely, the invitation didn’t come from Congress, it came from a group like LeadAmerica or the People to People program.

Both of my sons have participated in LeadAmerica programs, which are primarily educational programs. One of them did a business program in New York, where he met with business leaders, CEO’s, stockebrokers, etc., and the other did a science program in San Diego where he toured modern research facilities, manufacturing plants, and met with people who actually work in scientific fields. Both were great programs where they spent the 7 or 10 days living in college dormitories, and were taught by people in the respective industries rather than the typical left wing whack job educators.

Additionally, my oldest son participated in the People to People Student Ambassador program where he spent three weeks traveling to Italy, France, and England where he met with local and national leaders, and learned about the different cultures, histories, and governments. The Student Ambassador program was started by President Eisenhower after WWII as a long term attempt to develop personal ties between people from the world’s countries by introducing America’s youth to the people of those countries. Before they spent 3 weeks in Europe, they also spent 8 months or so preparing for the trip, and my son said it was his greatest life experience so far. In addition, he received a college/high school credit for his participation, which helps justify the costs.

Both programs that my family has experience with were excellent, well planned, well supervised, and highly educational. Neither of my sons chose to participate in a Washington, DC program, because neither are very interested in politics at that level, but if it is a LeadAmerica program, I wouldn’t hesitate to send them if that is what they wanted. If she was invited to one program, she could have the opportunity to choose to participate in another that she is more interested in. And, once she has participated with one group, it usually opens the doors to more.

Your granddaughter’s invitation could have come from another organization too, but I doubt that it is insidious. LeadAmerica has a “Congrssional Student Leadership Conference” that could be the one she was invited to. They have been doing summer education programs like this for a long time regardless of what party is in power.

My granddaughter just received a fancy letter from Congress to attend a 10 day youth leadership conference in DC. It costs $2400 but, she will get to meet “important Congressional leaders” watch Congress in session, etc. Rather expensive trip for a 17 year old high school junior, money that would be better saved for college imo.

I don’t have any of the details yet, she read me the cover letter over the phone, it mentioned names and committees I didn’t recognize. When I get out there I’m going to go over the additional information with a fine tooth comb.

Has anyone any knowledge of this event? Don’t know if it’s an annual thing or something new being cooked up by the present administration.

I have been following that particular case, but it is a nasty divorce case and I think I will stay away from it. Other than to say, I think the judge is treading in deep waters there.
For home schooling I was thinking about California where they recently started to attack home schooling by trying to require the parent to be a certified teacher (I think this is the correct reference). Many of my neighbors home school and I have to say the kids are well educated. It’s kind of a shame, we pay some of the highest school taxes in the nation and the home schoolers can out perform the public schools anytime.

If this trend keeps going I am afraid the home schooled kids will end up in the public schools. But, the good thing is; maybe they will learn valuable skills like this: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,509798,00.html

Great and much appreicated article Wisdom! I was very concerned about this doing the election process but my rants back then fell onto deaf ears. This is VERY scary stuff, but then, we know Michelle told us that America will never be the same; that we will NEVER go back to the “old” America.

Mata interesting that you brought up the courts. I only recently learned of the CS option after going in front of a California judge to dispute my $750 “right turn on red camera ticket.” Now that I think back, I do remember wondering (as I watched the others before me go in front of the judge), why only certain “types” were offered the “community service” option. I’m sure it has a connection for those without the means to pay, however I do remember being “unsetttled” by this “new option of which I wasn’t aware.”

A little OT but for anyone in CA, who could use an escape from Obama politics in need of total serenity and mindblowing beauty, the Ca Channel Islands are in FULL bloom; just got back from hiking Anacapa. It’s amazing what a day without “news” can do for the soul!
