Fuel in most countries is significantly more expensive than america. Much of the rise in 07-08 was due to the weak US dollar where imports are more expensive but exports cheaper. In a trading country -swings & roundabouts.

1973 saw the politics of oil transfer from Texas to the ME & thus OPEC.USA has influence over OPEC as a major consumer.

Iol is a scarce resource & will rise in price again sometime unless it is rationed out for 30 years.

It’s possible he’s waffling because low oil prices and low carbon emissions are incompatible goals, and he hasn’t gotten directives from Obama yet on which goal he’s supposed to be promoting.
That said, I don’t know how much influence we have on OPEC anyway. I’d be much more concerned about domestic energy policy and his views on that than any opinions he might have on jawboning OPEC.

I’m glad you posted this Mike. I was throwing together a post about the embarrassment that Chu is bringing to his job, but as usual, you are on top of it.

This isn’t getting a whole lot of press but it should. This guy is in charge of one of the most important departments in our modern government, and he thinks that OPEC is outside his domain. At least he is honest about his ability to do his job — “I’ve been dumped into the deep end of the pool”.

As a cabinet level secretary, he IS the administration, and has no idea of what his job is let alone how to do it. OPEC is going to run roughshod over him and we are going to see oil prices go through the roof again.
