I think much of the American public, conservatives included, still get much of their daily dose from mainstream sources with an overly liberal slant. “Bush lied us into war”, “No wmds found” has been deeply entrenched. I know people who don’t follow politics but they’ve “heard something or other about torture, civil liberties taken away” and other nonsense that amounts to rumor and innuendo in the eyes and ears of the semi-informed and those others who only know politics from Jon Stewart.

The rights of the Geneva Convention do not apply to people who neither obey the Geneva Convention nor are covered by the Geneva Convention.

According to Feith, it’s because of the very reason that he and the Bush Administration held the greatest respect for the Geneva Convention that they refused to allow non-uniformed combatants to be covered by its provisions. If they concede that, then it endangers civilians by encouraging fighters to hide out amongst the populace without any identifying uniform.
