I was not avoiding a question, I was responding to the tenor of the post. If the writer wanted respondents to comment on specific areas he should have posed that question. I don’t get what point you are making on demanding answer to those questions.

If Dems thought it was a good idea to cut troop funding and demand a withdrawal in 6months (back in 2006), then why isn’t it a good idea now when a President is saying 16months bare min, and most likely indefinitely?

Oh yeah…’case that call for cutting the funds was really just anti-Bush, not anti-war; ie they were just being partisans before being patriots.

Per stats, all branches met or exceeded their recruiting goals:

Active Duty Recruiting Statistics for Nov 2008:

Army: 5,605 accesions with a goal of 5,275; 106 percent
Navy: 3,082 accessions with a goal of 3,082; 100 percent
Marine Corps: 1,868 accessions with a goal of 1,782; 105 percent
Air Force: 2,916 accessions with a goal of 2,916; 100 percent

On the Reserve side, all six of the reserve componants met or exceeded their recruiting goals.

Army National Guard: 5,516 accessions with a goal of 4,889; 113 percent

Bring back the draft is a very bad idea even if it were to augment the present volunteer effort. Forcing someone into the military to work with someone who joined is like mixing oil and water.

what’s changed?
Is the army broken or not?
Were they right or not?
Were they playing politics with war or not?
Were they misleading the American people on a matter of national security or not?

To my knowledge, the question of reinstating the draft was a dead issue and did not arise again in the public forum following 2003-2004 Bush-Kerry election propaganda.

I believe you’ll find the links I provided are from 2006, 2007, and 2008. However, you are very correct in remembering that in late 2004 Democrats screamed that if Bush was re-elected there would be a draft. 4yrs later….still no draft. My questions remain:
what’s changed?
Is the army broken or not?
Were they right or not?
Were they playing politics with war or not?
