If Zardari doesn’t put a leash on his own military and/or purge out the Taliban/al Qaeda sympathizers this promises to get real ugly and unpredictable real quick. Mumbai was to India as 9-11 was to the U.S.. I suspect Obama will be as ineffective a leader in this as he was in the Illinois state senate. Gaffemaster Biden will be no help, neither will Hillary as all three of them are doves on foreign affairs and about as useful as treating AIDS symptoms with placebo.

We’re quickly running out of time for Bush-Cheney-Rice to do anything to help diffuse this & once they are out of office. I foresee very little practical application of America into this equation. There’s also no use looking to the U.N. for any real solution. All they’ve done is condemn the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Big Whoop:

I can see India doing a lockdown on it’s border, but not sure if India would use it’s new Agni III ballistic nukes (see: http://www.monstersandcritics.com/news/india/news/article_1290474.php), but there are a few sticky areas here. If you’re India, what would you target? With only a 3,000 klick range to work with, do you go for the terrorist camps in the north? That could endanger American & NATO forces along the border. Military targets, since the terrorist are being supported by a faction of people within the military? I don’t see them targeting the capitol as Zardari is certainly not condoning the terrorist actions, so that would be counter-productive. If India launches a nuke, would Pakistan or China respond (http://www.fas.org/blog/ssp/2008/05/extensive-nuclear-deployment-area-discovered-in-central-china.php)?

From a sovereignty/War on Terrorism aspect, since certain members of the Pakistani military/intelligence community have actual come out supporting these terrorists, despite Zardari & His minister’s position, an argument could be made that these terrorists were state supported and/or harbored by Pakistan. I don’t have any idea off the cuff what this event might leading to in regards to responses.

So if India does attack Pakistan…

would it be more likely that they would use the following to support their actions

The US national policy (the Bush Doctrine) calls for preemptive strikes
or
that the USA is already bombing inside Pakistan to get at terrorists
or
would they just state the obvious… that all sovereign nations have the right to self defense. Israel does this every day.
or
Obama says its ok.
