Obama Plans to Bring Back Slavery Through Required “Volunteerism” – [Reader Post]

Mary Beth posted this information in one of her comments.

From President-Elect Obama’s website:

Photobucket

Didn’t President Lincoln free the slaves?

I wonder if the community organizer missed that memo.

Furthermore, I wonder if the Constitutional scholar knows that the Constitution was amended to prohibit involuntary servitude.

Amendment XIII

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

    Aye Chihuahua:

Right now, all we can do is speculate exactly what Obama is going to do. Likely whatever he does do is going to be crafted go down easy but give everyone the s—s .

I know, I know….sometimes I just get a little too enthusiastic, had a post rejected today, likely because it was too far out…:-)

But anyway, we need to take a very close look at that ‘internet legion’ of B. Hussein Obama.

Do you realize how ignorant you sound? It clearly states “when you choose to serve,” and that Obama will “call” on Americans to help… I saw similar wording in my church bulletin. I’m very certain you are not racist, but when you post things such as this its the reason liberals turn around and say that everyone in a red state is an ignorant hick.

    Jose–

It also clearly states “by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year”

—last I checked, require means you have to do it — not much choice there.

    Reading comprehension problem perhaps?

Or a blatant attempt to obfuscate?

Did you read the line that says “REQUIRE”?

Being REQUIRED is not choosing to serve.

I am very certain that you are not stupid, but when you post responses such as this you leave the impression that you may be another mental midget splashing around in the shallow end of the Obama Brain Pool.

  9. @Jose:

The age of the person being pressed into mandatory service is moot Jose.

The issue is that REQUIRED service is strictly prohibited by Amendment XIII of the US Constitution except when it is imposed as a penalty for a crime.

True volunteerism is a great thing for any and all ages who wish to do it.

Being pressed into service whether you want to or not isn’t a great thing.

You have to realize when you use such incendiary words as Obama Plans to Bring Back Slavery Through Required “Volunteerism” its the same garbage that is spray painted on walls with “Obama wants to enslave the white man” on the side of an abandoned building. Don’t think that our youth should be encouraged to pitch in with community service projects? Absolutely, voice your opinion its a free country. Throw in such words as “slavery” and now it becomes more self defeating than anything.

“incendiary words” wow! what an insight..let me tell you! If McCain had used just a few ‘incendiary words’ a few weeks/months ago rather than being the gentleman and castigating his own supporters who were looking at Obama and being disgusted by what they saw, and firing up his supporters maybe this election would have had a different outcome. The only think he did to fire up anyone during his entire campaign was to select Sara Palin.

I have not heard any of the latter painted on walls, but the former is in print for all to see and is ‘vetted’, thus authentic, so, incendiary or not, they are factual.

Look, if we are going back to “Slavery” may be we can ask Obama to resurrect another fine old custom? That fine old custom would be “Hiring a Substitute for the Draft”. :)

Frankly, I read this an laughed. If he can get my two high school kids to get off there butts thru mandatory compulsive service that is okay with me. BTW, my kids high school (CA) already has a yearly requirement for comminity service. So, my boys will be VERY interested to see if the O’s new shtick will count toward their HS obligation. LOL!

I agree that its a form a slavery that is being promoted – and its a lot of hours. But many schools do require community service to graduate. And it appears to be legal. If it is included as a graduation requirement, how does that affect the involuntary seritude argument? Change the wording and end up with the same result. This is a serious concern.

Lincoln, through the Emancipation Proclamation, only freed the slaves in the states of which he was NOT then President, to wit, the Confederate States of America. Didn’t do diddly for slaves in NY state, Rhode Island, etc.

It was a PR stunt to tweak Jefferson Davis.

Actually, Baba, Lincoln didn’t have the authority to free the slaves – he could only free the slaves under enemy control. Whole books are written on that subject.

I don’t know if the website was changed, or if the original screenshot that aye chihuaha provided was a photoshop job, but it currently does not say anything about “requiring” service. I’m too tired to see if google has changelogs of the site, but this looks like a hype job. I’m no Obama defender, but if I’m going to argue his policies, I want to use accurate information.

From http://change.gov/americaserves/ (the same link aye chihuahu provided)

    America Serves
“When you choose to serve — whether it’s your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood — you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That’s why it’s called the American dream.”
The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

They are the new slaves of America. They don’t protect themselves, they just go by men rules and desires and they don’t hold them to account for their pregnancy, they just shut up and get abortions. Remarkable idiots!

Some schools already require some sort of community service around here before they can graduate. I didn’t like that idea when it was brought up. I just think it would turn off people to community service as it would be seen as punishment.

In some colleges and universities, mandatory community service is known as internships and you get units (a form of graduation credit) as a result. As far as I know, there is actually a $4,000 attachment for that 100 hours of community service for the colleges and universities. That $4,000 goes to pay off student loans and other educational fees. As far as any plans go, as president he can’t actually have a real say in how his plans go. As senator he could write the bills up himself, so why didn’t he?

I don’t get it. If there is a $4,000 attachment to it, than it is not a mandatory community service… it is a paid job. Words matters. Well paid job: $4,000 for 100 hours.

The idea of helping your country is not an opportunity to call that slavery. What kind of ship did you just get off of. Are the military volunteers slaves? Are the PTA members slaves? It is all called loving your country and willing to help it succeed. If you feel differently we can do it with out you and then bring you along later.

What kind of truck did you just fall off of?

Apparently you missed what was plainly said on Obama’s site.

The word “REQUIRE” eliminates the whole idea of “volunteer”. This is like the Sesame Street game “Which of these things is not like the other?”

No, members of the US military and the PTA are not slaves. Don’t be absurd. They volunteered. Furthermore, servicemen and women get paid for the job that they volunteered for. That makes your example even more ridiculous.

Volunteerism, when truly voluntary, is an excellent ideal.

Forced, or REQUIRED, volunteerism is not volunteerism at all, but involuntary servitude at best, slavery at worst.

Are you willing to allow the gov’t to violate the 13th amendment by creating programs which REQUIRE you to participate in them?

If so, then I’m sure you’ll have no problem with the Obama administration when they begin to trample on the first and second amendments as well.

YMMV, but I am not willing to give one inch when it comes to the Constitution, original intent of the founding fathers, freedom, and liberty.

ras – We call our Armed Forces “volunteer” because it is not compulsory to serve, as it is in some other countries (China, Poland, Singapore…), not because they are not compensated. Some words, like “volunteer”, have more than one slightly different meaning – other words, such as “require”, do not.

Now, I’m an Obama supporter, but there are times, in all his eloquence, he does make poor word choices – this would be one of them. And it would seem that the Obama camp did concede the point by changing the wording.

As for the point made about women, I live in a liberal bastion, so I can’t speak for the whole country, but most of my female friends here did not see Palin as representing their views on certain positions. Whether I agree with those positions or not, they voted on issues rather than genitals.

I am not a radical conspirator who believes we are all to be ensalved. That is like believing we never landed on the moon or that Obama is a member of a white supremist group. To believe that nonsense is absolutely hurting yourself with inside deliusion. What the heck is with you? However I do realize I did the same thing after Bush was first appointed the presidency and looked for every thing bad in him and actually believed he was in favor of the new world order his dad spoke of. Then with the second term I became very afraind for our nation’s security in the hands of incompetence. So with that I do indeed understand your thought process and can assure you it beocmes easier. The only difference here is that Bush lived up to the negativity he so dearly enforced on the people. The change in our legal rights, the wanting to alter the constitution regarding the burning of the flag, the unwillingness to listen to the real experts such as Powell, McCain etc.
My case of dislike was vindicated as Bush left office with the nation packing his bags for him. The overwhelming victory of Obama will indeed feed fear into the hearts on the tunnel visioned people who continue to believe in their selective government and hear only what they wish to hear. To actually believe we are to be enslaved by Obama and then see the country vote to be enslaved may add light to your dark world.

Why is it that people are so willing to consign other people’s children to compulsory labor? Middle school is grade 6 through 8 or 9, and high school covers grades 9 or 10 through grade 12 (10 years through 18 years old all told). Children are way too over committed now – the last thing they need is to be charged with even more obligations, let alone indoctrination. God knows the school day is way too full of social agendas and far too little actual knowledge as it is. As for college students, they are adults. Paying adults, who are contracting for an education – and no one has a right to force them to give time to some unknown collective agenda. When I was in college I had time for work and time for study – and darn little else. Forcing an adult to work for free or for pay – against his or her will, is a form of slavery. As for those who argue that the government subsidizes college education and can made such demands, well, far better and far cheaper educations were available prior to so much government monetary contamination. But if government money is an excuse for compulsory labor, then freedom is lost-Federal government money taints everything. Absolutely everything. Think carefully, for once freedom, any freedom, is gone – it may not be back, ever.
