I think it is partly because the left is anti-American and "the friend of my enemy is my enemy". But I do remember back in the early 70s that Israel was highly regarded by the left because of the kubutzim (sp?) which were socialist communes in Israel. The left extolled the kibutz as an example of successful socialism at work. Israel was mentioned in the same breath as Sweden as examples of how we could be if only we embraced socialism. But Israel's kibutzim gradually atropnied as the country became more of a free-market economy. I believe that is a big part of the left's hatred of Israel -- they are apostates who abandoned the socialist religion.
