Allow me to outline a personal experience with an Acorn registration process in Virginia.

I own one home in Las Vegas that I paid off before I retired from the military and usually vote absentee because as partiarch of the family since my grandfather's death, family crises often has me cross-country assisting other family members (Currently I'm in Georgia). I own another house in Virginia that I'm still paying on. Last week I became concerned when I did not receive my absentee ballot that I might have been dropped from the Nevada records. So I went to the Virginia DMV since I had other business to conduct there. Outside was an Acron rep doing voter registration, so I said to myself, "What the hell, today is the last day to register in Virginia, I might as well do it since for all I know, my name might have been purged from the Nevada records & I don't want to loose my vote this election."

I will note that this particular Acorn worker was courtious and did not try to encourage me to vote Obama. While filling out the application I noticed she did not ask me to produce any ID to prove who I was or that my local address or any other information I put on the registration form was accurate. Though I did have sufficient documentation to produce, had she asked. According to the Virginia registration board; if you register to vote with their offices you are required to produce a picture ID with a valid Virginia address. There is also a requirement according to the election board to annotate the voter's driver's liscense number, or state ID card number on the application. I was not told by the Acorn rep to do this, nor where I should put it.

So please explain to us; Why doesn't Acorn follow the state's own registration rules? I could tell by the twang in her voice she was a local. The only answer is that Acorn doesn't feel it is necessary to properly train their people or they don't care. Because of this, I left with some concerns that my own registration might be thrown out. Three days later I finally received my Nevada Absentee Ballot. I have decided to do the honest thing and go ahead and cast my Nevada vote and not to pursue it any further in Virginia. I do take the one person-one vote rule seriously.

Having worked for a non-profit fundraising organization that used street teams, I completely understand how the fraudulent registration cards get turned in to Acorn. Any time you hire people to do canvassing or outreach, a certan percentage will shirk the responsbilities of the job and fake it. I used to employ Point of Purchase stand placers (They put all of those little carboard stands with the "Take One" cards asking people to register for walk-a-thons and the like). Every year, out of the 20 stand placers we would hire, 2 or 3 would simply trash the stands and come back saying that they placed them all. Now, we had enough employees and volunteers who lived around the city, so we could spot check the areas that each stand placer had worked so that we could find the shirkers out quickly and fire them. What Acorn does is that they call the numbers given on every card three times. If they get no answer, they put the card in a Questionable pile, along with all of the obvious fakes (cartoon character names, nonsense or business addresses etc.). By law, Acorn is required to turn in EVERY registration form collected, even the obvious fakes. They put them all together and flag them as dubious and in need of scrutiny. It is the state election board's responsibiility to make the final determination that they are invalid. Acorn also provides the name andd contact numbeer for any Acorn employee who turns in a fake form to the state election board, thus aiding the state to prosecute the miscreant. Acorn is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Every election year, Repulicans try to make a big deal out of it, but the organization's hands are clean. Acorn follows both the spirit and the letter of the law.

What happens is voter cards would be issued to the addresses given on the registration and sent out. If the addresses were not-existent/undeliverable, they would go to the post office's dead letter office. For duplicate registrations they would still only issue a single voter registration card. In most states, though Democratic lawyers will try to cause problems, voter's would still be required to show valid id at the polling precincts. This would not block same day registrations & absentee voting,. The real problem with the Acorn flood of recistrations is they use overwhelming the registration offices to allow illegal alien and fake ID holders to vote sometimes multiple times because there is not enough time often to give every application proper scrutiny.

Curt, there's another update to your last source:

UPDATE 10/09/08 1300hrs: We just got more on this from someone else we know who works in these same circles here in Chicago. This is a different source than the one who provided the intel below. This person says, “There’s no doubt there’s an investigation. The only question is do they have the evidence to shut down ACORN before Nov 4th or will they just do these state-coordinated raids to try to keep the vote clean until they can indict the national organization?”

Step it up Fitz.

Brunner is appealing the judges ruling. There's only six days left to contest the registrations, so what happens if this isn't resolved in time? Will the ACORN registrations, plus ballots that were registered and voted on during the same day vote period count? Brunner apparently had everything locked up. How would they find the time to check it all out after they pull them from Brunner?
