I think what Mark is looking for, is to further document/research firsthand/second hand anecdotal accounts of what he already knows. Hopefully Christine sees his question, and returns to give a response.

Mark, you might be interested in trying to contact a poster who goes by Nanjing. He made a few comments in this thread, including:

Ordinary Iraqis have told me that Iraq had already been infiltrated by al-Qaida operatives even before the 2003 invasion, and indeed they were still there working as operatives and coordinating al-Qaida foreign fighters from North Africa to Indonesia prior to the fall of Baghdad.

al-Qaida in Iraq suffered hard about this time last year and moved what was left of their operation from Anbar Province to the suburbs of Iraq in hopes of getting better press coverage and creating more carnage.

Many Iraqis that I spoke to were mystified at American reluctence to take the threat seriously for any length of time; just five years (when I was there) after our 9-11 losses. I suppose even al-Qaida is a little miffed at our indifference to the attack. After all, 9-11 was suppose to be the kick off for the end of the Western Age; instead they watched Americans accuse eachother of a 9-11 conspiracy while they themselves were not given much mention in any discussion by Congress or members of the press.

Unfortunately, any war that lasts longer than a flash in the pan victory followed by a big “hoorah” isn’t popular with liberals, and I’m afraid to say, increasingly reluctant conservatives as well. Lets just hope it doesn’t take a thermonuclear strike against the U.S. mainland before people get serious.

I have said this many times prior, but how do people possibly think that reports such as this recent one concluding that Saddam had no ties to Al Qeada will be able to hold any credibility or pass off as fact? How do the politicians who doctor these reports justify their conclusions when it conflicts with the reports of our own allies on the ground so vociferously?

During the initial invasion, and the British first set foot on Basra within the Sunni Triangle, they had encountered members of Al Qaeda who were shooting at the British from a house when the soldiers were patrolling the euclayptis grove adjacent to Al Qaeda’s location. According to the U.K. Sunday Times who was reporting on this event stated that the enemies that were apprehended confessed that there were 1,200 of them in the city and that they had been there before the invasion took place.

Now, I will try to e-mail the editor of the U.K. Sunday Times and see if he or she could help me find the story again. Or I’ll try to search the website’s archives and see what I find there. If I find the article, then I will provide the link.
