If Obama wins it will be because he is a charismatic cult-like leader and is able to deflect all real questions, that’s the way things stand today. McCain is pulling no punches in attacking him on SOME issues. He is trying to protect himself from being labeled a bigot of one sort or the other, that’s why all the concern with the middle name, etc. Time will tell if this is a silly or workable strategy. Certainly when Bill Clinton attacked Obama before the SC primary this was portrayed as a lot more racist than it really was, whatever Clinton’s intent and was cleverly used to shift much of the black vote to Obama. I don’t think it’s completely clear whether the McCain or Cunningham formula of dealing with the “Hussein” issue is the right one. I can guarantee you that there will be multiple attempts to label McCain a racist and islamophobe no matter what he does, the question is how much resonance these attempts will find and of what kind. Certainly hammering Obama on specific, terrible errors of judgment like Iraq, Pakistan, NAFTA, the UN spending, make-work projects, taxes, etc. is a winner. Calling him an empty suit or a closet muslim are much riskier for McCain.
