So is Scott and The New Republic. Smith can stand by his story all he wants, its up to the publisher to fix it which the National Review did. The New Republic did not and does not to this day.

Had that happened there would be another civil war on. That's a far bigger - and more dangerous - fabrication to pull out of one's ass than "my Bradley Fighting Vehicle driver swerved purposely to run over a dog" or "we made fun of a disfigured woman in the mess hall." One of the stories was a report that 4 or 5 THOUSAND armed Hezbollah fighters descended upon a Christian neighborhood in East Beirut. Didn’t happen. Not even debatable. Had that happened there would be another civil war on.

That’s a far bigger – and more dangerous – fabrication to pull out of one’s ass than “my Bradley Fighting Vehicle driver swerved purposely to run over a dog” or “we made fun of a disfigured woman in the mess hall.”

National Review knows that every word printed by a conservative publication, not to mention all us bloggers, is scrutinized with a microscope looking for the smallest error with which to dismiss the entirety of our viewpoint. Like CNN, the New Republic knows that the prejudices and bias it projects are shared by the mainstream "news" media who are less likely to question something they themselves believe to be true. And besides, it's not like their moonbat liberal readers or viewers care one way or the other whether the story is true or not. After all, they were trained by the man from Hope who still struggles with the meaning of the word "is."

Credibility and integrity are clearly more important to the National Review than New Republic.
