Are you kidding…just one person, one has been fired! Come on…every person at State who has been there for more than five years should be fired…CIA too! Get rid of them all. Only hire back 1/3 of each group and level the playing field. While we’re at it, how about anyone in the Dept of Agri? What do these people do? There is so much opportunity to get rid of gvt wonks…the CIA is a nice start.

Oh, for god’s sake, with the recent media hype we could play “battling leakers” from both parties all week long if we wanted to. I made the mistake of going on an annotated blogging binge this weekend, each one citing more sources of information and concurring opinions than you could shake a stick at. After this, I came to the following conclusions:

All Democrats are America-hating, conniving, insidious bastards.
All Republicans are America-hating, conniving, insidious bastards.

And I don’t know which one is more true. Heck, the media coined the term “culture of corruption” because it’s a CULTURE, not a single PARTY! And before attempting to refute that statement, read 5 ultra-left-wing pro-communist baby-killing annotated blogs and 5 neoconservative GOP-fellating annotated blogs and tell me if you can still see straight from all the spin.

Maybe I’m just not a fan of government in general.

What’s ignored in your discussion, is the reason, exactly, why the US has to maintain GULAGS in the first place. Why are they necessary? What’s the benefit to the US?

The only benefit I can see, is more freedom to abuse POWs without having to worry about things like the international convention on the treatment of POWs or congressional oversight.

Porter Goss can’t point to one single case where the intelligence services wound up doing a better job because of these prisons.

He just fulminates on, telling everyone how important secret prisons are to the US and how he hopes grand juries and prosecutors will start hitting on not only leakers, but also reporters.

I say close ‘em. The US doesn’t need ‘em. And the information acquired by abusing POWs is probably worthless in any event.

From my readings, these secret prisons were begun under the Clinton administration in the war on terror which she would have known. Therefore, this was intended to bring down President Bush. And if she had problems with the policy, she could have gone to Congress or a superior to protest. There are many things she could have done rather than go to the press. It was obviously a politically motivated action. If IRS tax evasion is an imprionable offense and even shoplifting, why is this woman ONLY being fired. She should be put in jail for a long time. This did terrible damage to our national security.

Try this on for size in terms of prosecuting the reporter (sellign secrets to profit from them, be it via direct payment or newspaper sales, is still a crime as far as I know) – at leat the law below has no exceptions to it for “press”.

(e) Whoever having unauthorized possession of, access to, or
control over any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch,
photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model,
instrument, appliance, or note relating to the national defense, or
information relating to the national defense which information the
possessor has reason to believe could be used to the injury of the
United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation, willfully
communicates, delivers, transmits or causes to be communicated,
delivered, or transmitted, or attempts to communicate, deliver,
transmit or cause to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted the
same to any person not entitled to receive it, or willfully retains
the same and fails to deliver it to the officer or employee of the
United States entitled to receive it

Also deserving attention is:

U.S.C. Title 18, Part I Ch 37 Sec 793(e) Sec. 798. Disclosure of classified information

(a) Whoever knowingly and willfully communicates, furnishes,
transmits, or otherwise makes available to an unauthorized person,

Again, no protections there for the press.

Assuming this is all accurate (and I cannot see how it isn’t, given the extent of the research everyone has done) the Government MUST pursue a criminal prosecution. That fact that Ms. McCarthy was with the IG is all the more reason to come down hard on her, because the IG is the control function. It would be nice to see her charged with treason, but I don’t know whether that would stick.

If the Government does not prosecute (or lets her off with a minimal sentence and lets her keep her pension, etc., it will open the door to all manner of national security leaks.

Finally, give her background, what qualified her for the positions she held, anyway? No wonder we were blind-sided on 9/11 when we populated our national security organizations with politically-correct fluff.
